Artist Statement
Each time I start a new design or painting, I cautiously even hesitantly feel the cold, wet clay, the touch of the brush or pencil to the waiting surfaces and wonder if there is another image lurking in the shadows to creep into creation. I like to ask questions from the mysteries of soul of the inmates waiting to emerge. There are times the pain of creative thought and expression is similar to birth.
How can I reach out through my medium and life experiences to stimulate thoughts of experiences and interconnectedness to my community and the world is always prevalent in my processes.
I want to create a narrative that provides an opportunity for emotional self-investigation between the viewer and myself.
Biography
S. Darlene Mitchell lives in Battle Ground. She is a painter, sculptor, and owns/operates Indiana Clay. Darlene has exhibited widely and received numerous awards. She has taught classes at the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette and Purdue University. More of her diverse works can be found at Artists’ Own, where she is a founding member.
